How to Care for Your Potted Phalaenopsis Orchid?

Did you know the orchid is Singapore’s national flower? The Vanda Miss Joaquim, a hybrid orchid, symbolizes resilience and strength, qualities that reflect Singapore’s spirit. Orchids hold a special place in our hearts. Their elegant blooms, with delicate curves, colour combinations and intricate shapes, never fail to captivate us. Each flower is like a little masterpiece, effortlessly blending strength and beauty. There’s just something truly magical about the way orchids exude both grace and sophistication.

Known for their stunning blooms and surprisingly easy maintenance, orchids bring elegance to any space. Among them, the Phalaenopsis orchid stands out as a timeless beauty. With proper care, these graceful plants can thrive and bloom beautifully year after year.

Here’s a simple 5 steps guide to help you nurture your orchids and enjoy their charm every day!

1. Choose the right spot. Place your orchid in bright, indirect sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight. Keep it in a comfortable temperature range of 18°C to 24°C, and maintain moderate humidity (50-70%) by using a humidifier or placing a tray with water and pebbles near the plant.

2. Water your orchid properly, only water once a week or when the potting mix feels dry. Use room-temperature or distilled water and pour water through the pot until it drains completely, don’t let it sit in water.

    3. Use the right potting mix and repot when needed. We use a bark-based orchid mix or sphagnum moss to keep the roots healthy. Repot every 1-2 years or when the potting mix starts breaking down.

    4. Fertilize regularly by using a balanced orchid fertilizer (like 20-20-20). Fertilize every 2-4 weeks but dilute the fertilizer to half strength. Skip fertilizing when the orchid isn’t actively growing.

    5. Prune after blooming. When flowers drop, check the stem. If green, trim just above a bump (node) to encourage new buds. If brown, cut it back to the base.

    Common Issues:

    • Yellow Leaves? Too much water or not enough light.
    • Wrinkled Leaves? The plant is thirsty, water it.
    • Pests? Look out for bugs like mealybugs and treat them with insecticidal soap.
    • Root Rot? Check drainage and avoid overwatering. Healthy roots are firm and white or green.

Orchids usually bloom once a year, but good care can help them bloom again. Stick to a consistent routine of proper light, watering, and fertilizing.

With their exotic beauty and long-lasting blooms, Phalaenopsis orchids are a rewarding addition to any home or office. By following these care tips, you’ll enjoy vibrant, healthy plants that thrive year after year. Happy growing!
