More Than Petals: Are flowers worth it?
Before stepping into floral design, I never really understood why people would spend money on flowers. My mom would always say that flowers are expensive and a waste of money. It seemed almost irrational, buying something so fleeting, something that would inevitably wither and fade. Fresh flowers are not forever. They don’t last, and in Singapore’s humid climate, they seem to wilt even faster, their delicate petals surrendering too soon to the heat.
But over time, I began to see what I had overlooked. Flowers, despite their impermanence, have a way of marking moments in a way that few things can. They are expressions of love, comfort, celebration, and remembrance. They fill spaces with life, colour, and fragrance, even if only for a short while.
And maybe that’s the point.
Their beauty is in their transience. They remind us to be present, to appreciate what is here and now. To cherish fleeting joy. In that, they become something far greater than just petals and stems. They become a language, one that connects us to people, to emotions, and to the new memories in a way that lingers long after the last petal falls.
More than that, I love how easily we can connect with flowers, with nature. There’s something calming about arranging them, touching their petals, and breathing in their scent. It’s almost like a pause from the rush of life; a moment to slow down and just be. Flowers have a way of easing stress, lifting moods, and bringing quiet happiness. Perhaps that’s why they are worth every bit of their fleeting existence to me.
What are your thoughts?
